Jodie was nominated for her outstanding work in creating a community for women of all ages
during the golf season in Fort Simpson. She hosted weekly women’s night to encourage
women to come out and play.
Jodie is originally from Inuvik, NT but resides in Fort Simpson. She has been an athlete her
whole life playing sports such as soccer, baseball, volleyball, hockey, and speed skating. Due to injuries, she could no longer participate in contact sports. Q: What is the best thing about volunteering?
A: “The best thing about volunteering for the Ladies Night Golf was creating an environment for women of all ages to build interest in golfing, learn how fun the sport is, and have the goal of having fun. I believe after 3-4 years of ladies night, it is gaining more participants and success. I plan to keep volunteering for this program and next year involving high school girls to partner with a mentor to teach them about golf”

"What keeps me motivated about volunteering my time is that someone did it for me and I owe the time back. I owe the sport for all the lessons I learned along the way in my sporting journey. There were many ups and downs but sports were always there for me. Many of the best memories of my life came from being involved in sports. The court, field and ice were my comfort zones and I want to be there for the youth so they have a comfort zone to rely on when life gets hard.
Q: “ What I would like to say to anyone thinking about volunteering?”
A: “ It's not about you, it's about the youth. Don't judge yourself and talk yourself out of it. If you don't volunteer, who will? Time passes quickly so stop hesitating. There are never too many volunteers and the youth need your time more than you know. Take a chance and start with one hour until it becomes a habit."
